Buckby cans were for fresh water on working boats and they
sat on the roof next to the chimney. The first would be a 3 gallon then a 2 gallon, in times before ladders in locks the boatmen
and women would use the cans as steps and step off the top of the chimney to get off the boat and out of the lock to work
their way through. Many old cans that survive have dented tops through constant use. The mop and boat shaft would lie in the
handles.
When ordering a buckby can please order well in advance to your needed date, they are hand
painted specifically for you and are not a shelf item.
You
can choose your own colours and if you want castle scenes or just to keep it to roses. We will advise you if the colours will
work and suggest lining colours to complement.
You
can choose if the castles are to go either side of the spout or a design in the bottom center of the can, alternatively you
can choose "Bonnie" our favorite boat horse C1910. She is a black and white design and she can be seen walking through
the grass on our Coal Scuttle page.
